Theological help required

I am not a Biblical scholar, and although my Google-fu is pretty good, this subject is a bit... overwhelming ("About 65,900,000 results (0.14 seconds)").  I just have no idea where to start. That said, be advised that I am asking this because of a story I am writing, not because I feel the need to be converted.

My question is: What did God order the angels to do in relation to humans and/or Earth?

I've heard "obey" but that's pretty broad (and unhelpful). "Angels carry out the will of God." Also nebulous and unhelpful. "Protect humans and the Earth from Lucifer and the creatures of Hell", is a better (more specific) response, but I don't know if it's true.

If you can point me to specific passages, cool. If all you have are links to websites (preferably spam-less) then that's alright too.

I don't care if the answer comes from the Christian Bible, the Jewish Torah, or the Islamic Quran. In fact, answers from all three scriptures would be good as then I can amalgamate them to fit the needs of my story.

Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give me.
