One of my fellow writing students has recently gotten into Supernatural. I told her about the quality of fanfic in the spn community, so she asked for some recommendations. After a little more discussion, she stated her preferences as the above.
Gone with the Wendigo by bellatemple & with art by davincis_girl
Sam and Dean go into the New Hampshire wilderness to investigate a new case: whole groups of hikers are getting trapped in freak blizzards and then encased in solid ice. When a blizzard hits them on the trail, they take shelter in a nearby cave for the night, only to awake to find themselves transformed into brightly colored ponies and trapped in a whole new world where zebras speak in rhyme, ponies run apple orchards, good times and positive thinking are encouraged, and friendship? Friendship is magic.
Accidental Documentaries by tassossss
As Class Historian, Antonia is determined to make the best high school documentary that anyone has ever seen, but the first few weeks of school bring to light more than expected when a freshman girl goes missing, the new kid Dean takes an interest, and old traumas may be the key to the present. A wonderful mix of high school and case fic, where Dean is barely yet completely revealed through a series of day to day events and Antonia's interview, and then he's revealed again by her involvement in the case.
Angels in the Architecture by rivkat
Mal really needs to stop rescuing siblings. It always brings nothing but trouble. Alright, so this time the Winchesters rescued him first, and it seemed only reasonable to let them come along on his ship for a spell. When the third guy shows up, looking like someone from the central worlds (by way of a ditch), he knows his first instinct had been correct. Too bad it's too late to throw them back.
How to Survive by spectral_scribe
When Dean comes down with a mysterious illness, Sam unwittingly hands him over to Dr. House—a man they don’t trust and who doesn’t trust them. Meanwhile, the doctors race to figure out what’s killing Dean and end up digging a little too deep into the lives of the Winchesters, getting a frightening glimpse of a world beyond their own.
There’s One Born Every Minute by de_nugis
Dean has poisoned squid hickies. Dialogue fic made of awesome.
The Other Side of the Fence by like_a_raven
A six-year old Sam can’t sleep. Which means Dean can’t sleep. Which means the sheep know kung fu. No, really.
Little Brothers by paxlux
Where do Winchesters go when they’re hit with a de-aging curse? Why, to Bobby’s, of course.
Pattycakes by purple_carpets
"De-aged!Dean, birthdays, timeouts and Sammy (who's way too big to be a little brother, anyway)" Sam has to comfort Dean because Bobby sent him for a time-out and thinks he's lying and he wasn't! The wrecked kitchen wasn't his fault!
Summer Camp by gigglingcat
"I sent his brother to summer camp," he explained.
"You heartless bastard," laughed the manager.
"That seems to be the general consensus," John agreed
These are all pretty old, so if you know of any more recent ones, please let me know. I don't have a lot of time for pleasure reading currently, but I will at some point. (please, please, please, make it soon!)
On a side note, Supernatural is filming in my area today. The only name the PA could give me was Mark Sheppard's (and then the guy didn't know who Mark was!) However, they must be filming inside either the Kerrisdale Arena or Point Grey Secondary School as I couldn't see any lights or other equipment. Also (and more unfortunately) I couldn't stick around to see who/what else showed up. I still have 40 pages to write my next week, taxes to file, groceries, laundry... Hmmm. Maybe those can wait until tomorrow!
